A weekend will never be enough to discover all there is to know about a new city or location, let alone one with as much to offer as Monterrey, Mexico. However, you can make the most of the few days that you visit Monterrey to enjoy the sites and activities you can’t miss in the "Sultana del Norte".
Let us be your virtual tour guide through the best things to do in Monterrey. These are our recommendations as a definitive Weekend Guide of things to do in Monterrey.
There is no better way to start a vacation than giving pleasure to the palate. If you arrive in Monterrey on Friday evening or late afternoon, we recommend you start your visit with a delicious dinner. The Royal Steakhouse restaurant has excellent cuts of meat as well as delicious appetizers, salads and typical Mexican soups.
We recommend dedicating Saturday to get to know the heart of downtown Monterrey. Start in the historic center and visit the Government Palace, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the MARCO - the best contemporary art museum in Mexico!
Next, walk through the Barrio Antiguo, one of the oldest areas with the most history in Monterrey, until you reach the cultural area known as “3 Museums.” Here, you’ll discover the Government Palace Museum, the Museum of Mexican History and the Museum of the Northeast. This also begins the Santa Lucia Walk, where you can board a boat to navigate through a river and reach Fundidora Park. The Santa Lucia Walk tour is beautiful and picturesque and also one of the best things to do in Monterrey. It’ll also serve as a much-needed rest after walking through the center and the Old Quarter.
The last destination for the day is Fundidora Park that is open late - until 10pm. Discovery breathtaking green areas right inside the city with a combination of cultural venues, entertainment and sports. Without a doubt, it’s one of the must-see places in Monterrey.
On Sundays in Monterrey, we recommend two things. 1. Go to Chipinque Ecological Park and, 2. Discover the galaxy at the Alfa Planetarium (great for kids!). Both of these learning tours are located in the San Pedro Garza García area. Or, if you have a car, another option is to leave the city for the day and visit the Pueblo Magico of Santiago, located just 40 minutes from Monterrey. Santiago is surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes and has a beautiful colonial charm. Here you can also visit the famous Cola de Caballo waterfall.
